The fragility of images is a given. From their fleeting nature as they slip from our vision, to the susceptibility of the media on which we attempt to fix them, they are prone to failure notwithstanding the archival properties of certain substrates and image-making processes aimed at achieving a promise of permanence.
The digital world fares no better and is often even more likely to sudden, unexpected and ephemeral glitches which interrupt the presentation of an image which was whole and intact only moments before. These images are the result of the random faltering of electronic devices due to power variations, read/write conflicts, faulty circuitry, system incompatibilities, ageing machinery and inaccurate restoration of deleted files.
While some images break down completely, others retain a semblance of normality as if for a brief period one is permitted to look beyond the veil of the world into the quantum realm beneath.
